The long awaited new work of master filmmaker Terrance Davies does not disappoint with this swirling and impassioned autobiographical treatise on growing up in down trodden Liverpool after World War II. A dream-like blend of new and archival footage of Liverpool, personal anecdotes and poetry practically evokes the smell of past failures and hopes for a new beginning that filled Englands air in the 50s. Peppered with wry northern humor, Davies recollections makes this powerful and wonderfully creative doc all the more authentic. It often feels like a step into a time rift that lets you live the defining period for a generation. Undoubtedly, Of Time and the City will be screened for generations to come.
