In this unique film we are taken into the siege of Leningrad during World War II. It lasted for an interminable 900 days, with the blockade contributing to the largest-scale famine ever seen in the industrialised world and the death of some 800,000 people. Sergei Loznitsa has pieced together images of the siege uncovered in archives in Moscow. With the originally silent pictures and a meticulously reconstructed background soundtrack, the scenes from everyday life under siege seem to be set in the present. By not intervening in the montage but giving the scenes room to tell a story, Loznitsa enables the scenes to transcend the specific historic events and lead a new life.
