What Can a Film Festival Be?

What does the future hold for film festivals? Our gatherings of the filmmaking community, coming together from across the world, are now being seriously questioned. The whole chain, from production to exhibition, is being affected, and require reflection and dialogue - we need to find ways to continue promoting and defending filmmaking as a fundamental practice for our societies. When extreme situations come, we are asked to go back to the basic questions: what is a film festival, and what can it become? What are the main values and principles that need to be put forward? An exceptional group of programmers from different regions, debate future challenges in both programming and reception for film.

Chaired by Doc/Fest Director Cíntia Gil and film journalist Carmen Gray, speakers include Eva Sangiorgi (Viennale), Wood Lin (Taiwan International Documentary Festival), Jean-Pierre Rehm (FIDMarseille), Dennis Lim (Film at Lincoln Center / New York Film Festival), Rodolfo Castillo-Morales (FICG Film Festival Mexico) and Violeta Bava (Visions du Réel, Venice, Torino Film Lab).
