Three Afghan women express both fear and resilience as they bravely capture what life is like once again under the brutal misogyny of Taliban rule.
When the US and its allies departed Afghanistan in August 2021, there was little doubt regarding the future faced by every Afghan woman and girl under the Taliban’s repressive rule. The rights that had been enjoyed for a generation would soon disappear. Bread & Roses tells this story from the perspective of three woman who chose to speak up and to record daily life as it transformed from freedom to imprisonment. Sahra Mani’s film, produced by Jennifer Lawrence, shows what life was like for recently engaged dentist Zahra Mohammadi, government employee Sharifa Movahidzadeh and activist Taranom Seyedi, both before the Taliban returned to power and with the subsequent reintroduction of Shariah law. However, the film is less a sobering portrait of a society whose hopes have been dashed than a celebration of resistance.
