Non Fiction Diary
  • Year2013
  • Duration93 min

By the 1990s, Korea was undergoing a rapid transformation from longterm hardship to the full embrace of capitalism and economic prosperity. Non Fiction Diary offers up an original, pacey examination of Korea's national psyche, through the most notorious news events of the 1990s. The country's first serial killers were a group of angry young men from a small village determined to "kill the rich,", carrying out a number of profoundly gruesome murders. Around the same time, shoddy construction led to the collapse of both the Seongsu Bridge, and a hastily built shopping mall, killing 500 people. Made over five years, director Jung Yoo-suk speaks to key figures involved in these events -- many speaking frankly for the first time -- to uncover the inherent contradictions in capitalism, and the brutal soullessness at the heart of a political elite focused on preserving its status above all costs.
