As part of our aim to make Sheffield Doc/Fest as accessible as possible, we are for the second year rolling out a budget accommodation initiative, aimed at emerging filmmakers. Doc/Host aims to ease the financial barriers of travelling and staying in Sheffield.

What is Doc/Host?

Doc/Host is a connecting service to pair emerging documentary makers/creatives with Sheffield residents who can offer accommodation during the festival. For emerging makers who are not currently earning above the UK Living Wage (£10.55 per hour in London, £9 elsewhere), we want to do all we can to ensure Festival participation. Sheffield locals can play a key role in making Sheffield's international documentary festival more inclusive and exciting, by hosting a maker in their home between 4-9 June 2020.

How does it work?

For Makers:

If you're a documentary maker / creative currently earning less than the UK Living Wage for your city of residence, you can apply to be connected with a Sheffield local offering a spare room. After application, Doc/Fest will put you in touch with someone on our Doc/Host list. It is the filmmaker’s responsibility to decide if the potential host is the right fit for them and to organise the logistics of their stay after connection.

Sheffield Doc/Fest has not visited any of the homes on our list and takes no responsibility for the state of the accommodation offered. Potential hosts are connected on a first-come first-served basis.

Makers will need to purchase a Festival Pass to take part in Doc/Host and attend Doc/Fest activities.

Doc/Host applications will re-open in early 2020. Keep an eye on our social media for news!

For Sheffield Locals:

Want to assist in helping an emerging doc maker/creative be inspired by and connect with others attending Sheffield Doc/Fest and grow their career?

To be part of Doc/Host you’ll need:

  • Live within 4 miles of Sheffield’s Tudor Square
  • A spare, self-contained bedroom for your guest
  • A willingness to be a friendly host to a filmmaker between 3-10 June 2020

In exchange for a confirmed filmmaker and host accommodation pairing for the Festival, Doc/Fest will provide you with two (2) Doc/Lover wristbands giving each wearer access to 12 films of their choice, depending on availability, in the programme.

For hosts, Doc/Host gives local residents the chance to take part in and contribute to Doc/Fest and will make a meaningful difference in supporting documentary storytelling from a wider range of voices.

It is the host’s responsibility to decide if the potential filmmaker is the right fit for them and to discuss the logistics of their stay. Doc/Fest cannot be held responsible for the personal actions of the filmmaker during their stay in your home.

Doc/Host applications will re-open in early 2020. Keep an eye on our social media for news!
