The team behind Children of the Blitz discuss reframing a familiar history through children’s testimony, challenging dominant narratives and reshaping collective memory at a time of renewed conflict.

The Blitz remains one of the most mythologised chapters in British history, often framed through a lens of resilience and the ‘Blitz spirit’. In this session, the team behind the BBC documentary Children of the Blitz explore how they challenge familiar narratives by shifting geographical and experiential perspectives, moving beyond London to reflect bombings across 70 towns and cities, which killed 43,000 people. They foreground testimony from the last surviving witnesses to offer an intimate portrait of wartime Britain through children’s eyes, at a moment when the realities of civilian conflict and childhood experience feel urgently present once again.
