Channel 5 was the first broadcaster to openly question the Letby verdict in two documentaries that uncovered key evidence, shaped legal proceedings and redefined investigative storytelling.
When reporting restrictions on the Letby case were lifted in 2024, Channel 5 – the UK PSB with the least production budget and current affairs pedigree – boldly aired two investigations: Lucy Letby: Did She Really Do It? and Lucy Letby: The New Evidence, which have since impacted the ongoing legal process. A year later, multiple rival productions are examining the conviction's safety. But was TV documentary-making slow to respond?
How do filmmakers navigate the ethical and legal challenges of such harrowing cases? Can documentaries play a role in revealing key evidence and influencing legal proceedings? And how do broadcasters balance compelling storytelling with their responsibility to victims, families and the justice system? Channel 5’s Dan Louw will discuss the project with filmmakers Elspeth O’Hare & Jennifer Gillroy and others.
