Join leading international voices rethinking how advocacy and collective action can strengthen the documentary ecosystem by building sustainability and forging meaningful connections with audiences.
It’s hard out here for documentary filmmakers. Industry discussions around current difficulties in funding and distribution often centre on market-oriented solutions such as new streaming platforms, data transparency and filmmaker residuals. While these help some, they may simply prop up infrastructure that continues to erode the real problem: sharply decreasing public access to creative and public-interest documentaries. It’s tempting to look at countries with stronger film support and attribute it to cultural differences – but we can water the grass on our side of the fence, too.
How can policy advocacy truly make a difference in filmmaker sustainability and audience development? In this lively panel, an international group of filmmakers and advocates will share what they are doing – and what’s working – to push back against the streaming era, shifting audience behaviours and the rise of docutainment.
Speakers:
Steve Presence (Acting CEO, Documentary Film Council & Senior Lecturer in Film and TV at the University of Bristol)
Abby Sun (Producer, Director of Artist Programs, IDA, Executive Board Member, Future Film Coalition & Distribution Advocates)
Natalia Imaz (Producer & Executive Board, DAE)
Fourth speaker to be announced
Moderator: Krishan Arora (Producer, Consultant & DFC Member)
Supported by the Documentary Film Council
