The story of ‘Captain’ Krohokrenhum, leader of the Gavião indigenous people, from Pará state in northern Brazil, who died in 2016.
Director Vincent Carelli, founder of the Video nas Aldeias Project that supports indigenous peoples’ identities through audiovisual resources, presents an evocative portrait of the one-time leader of the Gavião (Hawks), who lived in the Brazilian rainforest. Krohokrenhum, who was 90 when he died, tells stories that evoke a rich past for his young audience. In particular, he details the prejudice and exploitation his people experienced at the hands of foreign and colonial forces, as well as the civil war that unfolded among factions of his people. This richly detailed and rewarding film makes excellent use of verbal history.
