Wanjugu Kimathi is on a mission to find the remains of her father, Mau Mau leader Dedan Kimathi, and to resettle his comrades, who were displaced by colonialists.

Directors Meena Nanji and Zippy Kimundu follow Wanjugu between 2016 and 2023. But the story they present begins decades before, when Kenya was under violent British rule – which led to the founding of the Kenya Land and Freedom Army and the Mau Mau uprising. Almost seventy years later, colonialism’s violent aftermath remains a painful memory for people like former freedom fighter Mukami and Kimathi’s widow, Wanjugu’s mother, who seeks closure over her husband’s missing remains. Wanjugu's search unearths new problems; her mission to resettle the living Mau Mau and their descendants is proving a challenge with the Kenyan government and the British businesses still illegally occupying ancestral lands. But Wanjugu remains steadfast in her goal: ‘freedom for Kimathi; land for his comrades’.
