A filmmaker and his mother look back on twenty years of family life, love and death, weaving animation, home recordings and memory into a shared act of healing.

William David Caballero and his mother Milly sit down to make sense of decades of loss, love and caregiving within their Puerto Rican family in Fayetteville, North Carolina. TheyDream is the moving result of their collaboration. Home videos, family photographs and archival sound recordings are turned into animated sequences that bring loved ones who have passed away back to life, guided by their original voices. At its heart, this is a film about what it means to watch parents age, to carry loss, and to ask who takes care of the caretaker. Messy and tender in equal measure, it moves through grief, ageing, regret and companionship with disarming honesty. TheyDream is gentle, painful, and deeply human.
